Longevity at its "CORE"

A board that lasts a lifetime? Or one you can compost?

Sustainability gets thrown around a lot.

Bio resins. Recycled foam. Compostable materials. It all sounds right. And in many ways, it is.

But there’s another way to look at it.

What if the most sustainable board isn’t the one that breaks down the fastest…
but the one that never needs replacing in the first place?

At Simon Jones Designs, that’s where we start.

Every board is built by hand on the east coast of Australia using materials chosen for strength, performance, and longevity. High-density foam, quality resin, and proper construction. It might add a little weight, but it means fewer replacements and more time in the water.

Build fewer boards. Build them properly.

That’s the trade off we’re willing to stand behind.

We’re not ignoring what’s next. Flax cloth, bio blanks, and bio resins are all part of the conversation. But they’re not rushed. Not pushed into production before they meet the same standard as everything else we make.

Because if it doesn’t last, it doesn’t solve the problem.

That said, we’re always curious.

We’ve recently been lucky enough to receive a 100% agave blank from Grow Blanks. It’s early days, but it opens up some interesting possibilities.

Watch this space to see what Dad (Simon) shapes it into. It could be something special.

We’re also looking beyond the life of the board itself. Working with engineers here in Australia, we’re exploring ways to repurpose old boards into insulation, construction materials, and other second life applications. Keeping things out of landfill where we can.

Even the way boards are shipped is considered. Minimal packaging. Cardboard, bio tape, and recyclable materials wherever possible.

There’s no claim of perfection in any of this.

Just a clear direction.

Build things well. Make them last. Keep them in the water.

Because in the end, longevity might be the most sustainable choice we have.

Longevity Is at the Heart of It All

Dings are inevitable. If you surf your board, it’s going to happen. What matters is how you deal with them. Handled properly, a repair doesn’t shorten the life of a board. In many cases, it extends...

On Mid Lengths, Style, and Quiet Revolutions

“It was genuinely fun to step back and reflect on how boards are not just tools, but reflections of how people want to move through the water and, in some ways, the world around them.” - Simon Jones
