Every now and then a surfboard ends up exactly where it's meant to be.

Mason Ho recently slipped over to Mexico in search of a fun swell. It wasn't exactly a smooth start. After snapping his quiver and taking a few beatings on the sand, the session looked like it was over before it had really begun.

Then something pretty special happened.

A surfer from New York, who just happened to be travelling with one of Simon's 6'9" Fiji channel bottom twin fin, handed the board over and told Mason to take it for a spin.

The result speaks for itself.

Before we go any further, it's worth mentioning that Mason's primary surfboard sponsor is ...Lost Surfboards (Mayhem), where he works closely with legendary shaper Matt Biolos. Mason has spent years pushing the limits of modern surfboard design.

But we thought this was a rad moment worth sharing.

One of the things we love most about surfboard design is seeing how different surfers approach the same board. Everyone has their own style, rhythm and way of reading a wave. Watching someone as creative as Mason jump on a board he didn't bring, didn't order is fascinating. It gives you a genuine glimpse into how another surfer interprets one of Dad's (Simon's) designs.

We're incredibly fortunate to have had a handful of Simon Jones Designs boards under Mason's feet over the years.

Back in 2021, during Stab Magazine's EAST series, Mason picked the Au Go Go as his favourite board of the series. He enjoyed it so much that he chose to ride the very same board in the Stab Surf100 event later that year. Moments like those mean a great deal to us, not because they change who we are, but because they reinforce what we've always believed: build boards with care, and they'll eventually find their way beneath some pretty amazing surfers.

As for this session, the Fiji looked right at home. Designed to cover ground quickly while maintaining speed, drive and hold through its deep channel bottom, it still has the freedom and playfulness that makes a twin fin so much fun. Seeing those design ideas come alive under one of surfing's most creative surfers was a real treat.
