Our Commitment to Sustainability

At Simon Jones Designs, sustainability is at the core of everything we do. Every surfboard is handmade on the East Coast of Australia, using the finest materials sourced from around the globe. From premium foam to top-quality resin, we prioritise strength, performance, and longevity. Our high-density foam may add a little weight, but it ensures each board is built to last—reducing the need for frequent replacements and keeping boards in the water for years.

We're continuously exploring innovative materials like flax, bio blanks, and bio resins. While these options aren't ready for full-scale production just yet, they're showing great promise. We're committed to refining these materials to ensure they meet our high standards for quality and durability.

Our sustainability focus doesn’t end there. We're actively working with leading engineers in Australia to find creative ways to repurpose surfboards at the end of their life cycle. The vision? Transforming old boards into building materials, insulation, and even pavers. It's all part of our effort to reduce waste and give our boards a second life beyond the ocean.

Our ethos is simple: build fewer boards, but build them to last. Because the longer a board stays in the water, the better it is for the planet.

Our Eco-Conscious Packaging
*we are waiting on a re-stock of eco-conscious packing materials - not all orders are shipped as listed below

We’re committed to using eco-conscious packaging materials for shipping our surfboards worldwide. Our packaging includes cardboard, bio paper tape, bio cling, minimal glue, and, in some cases, bio bubble wrap. Our materials are chosen to minimise plastic use and lessen environmental impact. Each board is carefully packed to ensure it arrives safely while keeping waste to a minimum—good for your board, and even better for the planet.

How to Recycle Our Packaging Materials

  1. Cardboard Boxes

    • Flatten the boxes to save space and make them easier to recycle.

    • Remove any excess glue, though small amounts are generally acceptable in most recycling programs.

    • Place the flattened cardboard in your curb side recycling bin or take it to your local recycling center.

  2. Bio Paper Tape

    • This tape is made from biodegradable materials and is fully recyclable along with the cardboard. No need to remove it—just leave it attached when recycling.

  3. Bio Cling

    • biodegradable cling wrap can be recycled or disposed of in the general rubbish bin. Once disposed to landfill, biodegradation is accelerated approximately 90%+ faster than conventional plastic cling wrap, producing an organic matter (a natural fertiliser) and no microplastics.

  4. Glue

    • Minimal glue is used, and most recycling systems can process cardboard with small amounts of adhesive.

  5. Bio Bubble Wrap

    • In some cases, we use EcoPure® Polycell’s bio bubble wrap, which is supplemented with an organic additive that causes the plastic to degrade through a series of chemical and biological processes in a landfill disposal environment.

    • This material is 100% recyclable, so it can be placed in soft plastics recycling where available. If soft plastics recycling isn't accessible, it will still break down more sustainably than conventional plastic in landfill conditions.

Extra Tips

  • Keep it dry and clean: Ensure the cardboard and bio bubble wrap are free from food waste, oils, or excessive dirt.

  • Reuse if possible: Our sturdy boxes and bubble wrap can be reused for storage, moving, or even DIY projects before recycling.
